1. Build searches around exact buying intent
Start with the product identity you actually want to buy. For trainers that might mean brand, model and adult size range. For clothing it might mean brand, garment type, size and maximum price. Avoid making one search so broad that most results are irrelevant.
- Use model names where identity matters.
- Set a realistic maximum buy price.
- Use condition filters where they reduce noise.
- Exclude obvious wrong-scope phrases such as kids, junior, single shoe or box only when those are not part of your strategy.
2. Separate the alert from the deeper decision
A new listing alert should be fast. Condition review and resale analysis can take longer. Treat the alert as an invitation to inspect the listing, not as a recommendation to buy.
3. Check identity, size, condition and completeness
Confirm the exact model, adult or junior sizing, colourway where relevant, included components and visible wear. For footwear, look at outsole wear, heel wear, upper damage, separation, staining and whether both shoes are clearly shown.
4. Compare resale evidence conservatively
Do not let one unusually expensive listing define the resale value. Compare multiple relevant items and treat weak matches as lower-confidence evidence. A resale estimate should become less confident when identity, condition or market evidence is weak.
5. Record the real outcome
Forecast profit and realised profit are different numbers. Once an item sells, record what you actually paid, actual cleaning or repair costs, any postage or packaging you paid, and the final sale amount. That is the only way to know whether the sourcing strategy worked.
