Quick answer
Your maximum eBay bid should come from the resale case, not from the current auction price. Start with a realistic expected resale price, subtract every cost and the minimum profit you require, then reduce the ceiling further when condition or market evidence is uncertain.
The maximum-bid formula
A simple reseller ceiling is:
If the auction also charges postage to you, include that in the acquisition cost. Your bid itself may therefore need to be lower than your total maximum purchase cost.
Worked example
Imagine a console that you believe can realistically resell for £120. You expect £8 outbound postage/packaging, £7 cleaning or replacement accessories and you want at least £30 profit. Ignoring any account-specific selling costs for the example, the maximum all-in acquisition cost is £75.
If the seller charges £6 postage, your maximum bid would be about £69. The important part is setting that number before the auction becomes competitive.
Use a resale range, not the highest sold example
Do not anchor your bid to the single best sale you can find. Compare several genuinely similar items and ask whether yours is better, worse or equivalent in condition and completeness. If the evidence is £95, £110, £115 and £145, a £145 assumption needs a very strong reason.
The eBay profit calculator is useful for testing different resale assumptions before you set the ceiling.
Adjust for uncertainty
Uncertainty should make your maximum bid lower, not higher. Common reasons to add a safety buffer include untested electronics, unclear model numbers, missing chargers/controllers, poor photos, expensive returns, authenticity risk or a thin market with very few comparable sales.
When the evidence is weak, passing on the auction is a valid outcome.
Do not let the closing price rewrite your rule
The final minutes of an auction create pressure because every extra £1 can feel small. But five or ten small increases can remove the entire expected margin. A reseller is buying an asset with a required return, not trying to win the auction for its own sake.
Write the ceiling down or calculate it with the safe bid calculator, then treat anything above it as somebody else's deal.
Track auctions without auto-bidding
An auction tracker can keep closing times, current prices and your safe ceiling in one workflow. Resell AutoBot's auction monitor supports tracking and analysis, but it does not place bids automatically. That preserves the final purchase decision with you.
